Literature Text

A person might compare
Their very being to their house,
Their room.
Their place of isolation.

Their belongings they have hidden
Shall tell you…WILL tell you
Who that person is and was
And what they shall be.

The color and decoration of the walls
Tell you the color that represents THEM.
Are there designs? Posters?
Have they laid out their interests for all to see?

Should the contents of their shelves
Tell you the darkness within their souls?
How many deaths have occurred within the bound covers of books
That they keep?

Perhaps even their bed
Tells a story of its own.
Do they keep the animals from their youth beside them when they sleep?
Did they move in their sleep to make the covers so jostled?

A closet hides what they find right
To wear…to hide…to express…to fear.
Dull, average clothes and casual jeans
Or flashy outfits and Lord knows what?

Why must we hide ourselves away
Inside this closed space?
Open the door! Open the door!
To the room of my soul.
I know that I'm not the first to realize that you can tell a lot about a person by looking in their room. Even if you don't decorate your walls, your life is in their. But we also tend to hide ourselves away when outside of that room, hiding secrets to feel more "in," don't we?
